Hi all,
As per my post in the wanted section I am now the proud owner of a 1975 850T Big smile

The bike is currently sat in a shipping yard site in Canada waiting to go on a boat to Blighty where I will pick her up and the fun will begin.

She's in great shape for her age which is mainly due to the fact that she's been sat in someones dry basement since 1980!  So a full strip  down and restoration is on the cards as time and funds permit.

So whilst she waits for the boat and her voyage I am starting to plan what I need to locate in terms of suppliers and parts.

My current thinking is:

  • Paint:
  • Any sources for paint codes for the original brown?
  • Did I read somewhere the striping is gold leaf?
  • Any recommended paintshops for original paint jobs?
  • Seat
  • Ditch the king & Queen seat and replace with an original replica
  • Any recommendations for this or a replica cover to get the seat retrimmed?
  • Cases, hubs etc
  • Vapour blasted any recommendations?
  • Any post blasting coating to preserve the finish?
  • Frame
  • Powder coated, any bike specialist recommendations?
  • Switchear
  • Any recommendations for refurbishing these?
OK so that's my initial thoughts, here she is (providing I have done this correctly):

Sorry for all the dumb questions but I can't wait to get started

Phil

Well done Phil, looks a good un.
Ray Dunkley at Leicester is your man for vapour blasting + he's a Guzzi Man, from my experience you won't need anything doing after vapour blasting or bead blasting, keeps its good looks no problem.
Good luck with the build , look forward to progress pics Wink

Hi Chilly,

I was going to try and twist your arm some more but this came up at too good a price to refuse and shipping looks like being really cheap so far, until the UK government get involved that is.

Looking at the photos zoomed in I am not sure how sound the silencers are but will obviously know when i can see them for real.  Are the ones from Gutsibits replicas or different design?

Hi Phil, Fugly, Fugger...

Not a lot I can help you with as far as referrals since I'm in Belgium...

The best seat replica I've found is this: http://lgccompany.it/en/seat/6055-double-seat-t3-t4-g5-sp-convert.html, but it's more Convert-like and I'm not tempted for my T3.

Source for a paint code and much more: https://www.mgcn.nl/database/mg-kleurcodes

I'll be interested to see how you get on, hang in there !!

Hi Fugly.I had an 850T many years ago The gold lining on the tank and side panels was a metallic adhesive tape of some kind and not very impressive.
If I was going to repaint an 850T, I would have the gold lines properly painted on.Apart from that, smashin' bike.Enjoy!!

Hi Dave,

Thank you, I saw a pic of a restored one and seemed to remember that the guy used gold leaf!

Will have a better idea when the old girl arrives off the boat.

Hi Fugly,
I bought a T3 Cali and refurbished it 2 years ago.  Also just finished a V7 Sport.  Some of the guys I used...

Vapour blasting - Ray D, Leicester
Chrome Plating - Ace Plating, Birmingham
Wheel Building - Central Wheel Components, Colehill
Powder Coating - RPA Bristol
Paint - Barnham Vehicle Services near Bury St Edmonds.

For parts I find Stein Dinse hard to beat.  The cheapest and very good service.
I look forward to the bike arriving.  Please keep a regular blog on this forum of your progress.  Always interesting to follow a good rebuild.

Cheers,
Derek

I am reminded of years ago meeting someone who'd bought a limited edition Bee-Em boxer, silver with like a rainbow design of graduated blue stripes, turned out they were stick-on plastic! Shocked

He said, all that money and they're stick-on stripes. Hadn't twigged it until after he'd bought the bike!

OK boys and girls, I've received notification and an invoice to confirm the arrival of my 850T at Tilbury.

Paperwork completed invoice paid and hopefully picking up next week once all the paperwork has been processed.

Starting to feel excited LOL

OK so today was the day I went to Tilbury to pick up my 850T Smile

However, on arrival I was advised that the bike had sustained some damage in transit.

It transpires the packing and protection that I paid for with the shipping company was ignored and the bike was wrapped with some corrugated card which was held in place by cling film!  Lets just say that we are in discussion right now so won't name and shame just yet.

In fairness, given the absolutely crap job they did of packing the bike for transit I am surprised the damage isn't worse.  The bike has sustained a smashed rear light unit including back plate and one of the "Aprilia" Indicators which I believe are as rare as rocking horse poo, so if anyone has a spare lens and feels like helping out a restoration project let me know.

Anyway here she is, warts and all.

There were also a couple of interesting cars that came over as well

Can't wait to get started.

Am not going to be able to start for a few weeks due to family commitments but she is in great shape for 43 years old and hopefully won't be too many nasty surprises.

Will update this thread as I go.

First step will be to photograph every nook and cranny and all cable runs and routing for when it goes back together.

But you can expect lots of dumb half-arsed questions to come.
