Yes the bores appear to be Nikasil.

Silicone is good for sealing exhaust pipes but not much else IMO. I've never had a problem with Wellseal blocking oilways.

True Johnno, but it's not nearly as dangerous as Silicone RTV.I've seen at least two big end seizures due to that stuff. Not on my bikes though, I wouldn't give it house (shed)room.

Don't know about Guzzis but on my Commando I always used a very thin coat of Wellseal (combined with a well annealed copper gasket) which cured the ubiquitous leak from the pushrod tunnels.

So does it have replacement Nikasil bores then? |

Thanks for confirming my own thoughts. I can't see that some compound would have much resistance to a combustion chamber leak in any case.
Likewise the Triumph twins with the compound gaskets also benefit from re-torqueing two or three times. I understand that modern engines use 'stretch' bolts to compensate for settling. |

I don't use any gasket goo on the cylinder head gasket on my Guzzi. I put the gasket on dry and don't have any leaks......not from the head gasket anyway.
Also I second what jpc has said about re-torquing.

Hi Roy, assuming you'll be using new gaskets (of course), there's no reason to use compound.
However I've found it profitable to re-torque the heads after simply warming up the engine once and letting it cool off completely (dead cold), then once again after riding 500 km/ 300 miles or so. It' a bit of work but you'll find the torque wrench takes up a tiny bit of slack each time, so the work is not in vain. JP

I wouldn`t use it on any cylinder head but I would check the mating surfaces for being true or maybe it was a quick repair to save the cost of a new gasket!

Hi.
Having removed a head on my 71 V7 to check for chrome bores (no), I notice that the head gasket had been put on with some jointing compound. I wouldn't use this on my Triumphs, but I'd be interested to hear if it's a good or a bad idea on an old Guzzi. Cheers Roy |
