Just picked up this '69 V700 from the original owner. Came with all of the parts not shown in the photos, plus a pair of Bates saddlebags and a factory police fairing. Needs lots of TLC, but the price was right ($500) and it was only 80 miles away.

Nice - the price, especially! Super project - we wouldn't pick up a project of that nature for anything like that money in the UK...  unless you were super lucky and strictly word of mouth!

Welcome to the forum - please keep us posed on progress!

I've been here for almost two years, I just don't post much. Thanks for the welcome anyway. Smile

I was both "super lucky" to find this and it was sort of "word of mouth". The owner had contacted me about making it roadworthy again for him, but quickly realized that it would cost more than he wanted to spend. Plus, he's 70+ years old and has problems with his legs. So, he thought it best to move it along to someone that might whip it back into shape and ride it.

It was last registered in 1980, so a pretty thorough teardown for inspection will be necessary. I'll be replating the original cylinders and reusing the original pistons. Heads will be rebuilt with new valves and guides. I have a Scrambler Cycle alternator kit to go on it, earlier V700 rocker covers, and original headlight/horn switch and some other good stuff.

The plan for this one is to leave it pretty much as-is cosmetically (other than lots of cleaning!), fit "dual-sport" tires, a skid plate to protect the sump, solo seat, small rack, Wirth fork springs and Ikon shocks and then use it as my dirt road/forest road/fire road exploration bike.

You're certainly getting well stuck into it. Obviously a lot to do but loads of potential.

A lot more work and $$ than I originally had hoped, but I'll do what it takes to make it right mechanically.

Never seen piston rings like that before.

The rings themselves are "normal", there's just two oil rings instead of one. I bought these new pistons to replace the originals and will have the cylinders replated in Nikasil.

I was looking at a piston the other day with a ring under the wrist pin - stuck me as being unusual. Can't remember for the life of me now where I saw it or what I would have been doing with it. Must be an age thing. Hope it isn't an engine I'm currently supposed to be working on.
