Good ol' Brunstrom. He's been enjoying his retirement since 2009 but the reputation lives on.

Being frogmarched to a cash point in France by the police is b**dy annoying. At least in uk you are treated slightly better
I'll settle for Wales any time |

Even back in 1975, when my Dad was done for speeding in our 1959 Ford Consul. And this was back in the day when you talk your way out of trouble for minor indescretions... didn't work with the North Wales police though

But they get the fine, which is more than can be said for foreigners in the UK.

Yes and not much discretion shown in France, still is in North Wales provided it is a human enforcer. I remember crossing a solid sliproad road line near Boulogne Sur Mer when I realised at the last moment that the poorly signed and unclear exit road was the one I needed along with the French registered car in front of me. Guess which one of us was fined by the gendarmerie waiting at the end of the sharply curved slip road (so unseen from the main road in advance). My suspicion is that this was a common place for non local drivers to get confused. My manoeuvre was entirely safe ad there were no other vehicles at the time behind me although I accept this was an infringement and not something I make a habit of. The point is that the sometimes annoying behaviour of the French authorities would not stop me going to France, and neither should the generally reasonable behavior of the authorities in what is one of the safest, most welcoming and scenic parts of the UK.

The police in France are not allowed discretion.
It's also not unknown for the local Gendarmerie to set up a picnic table beside a non obvious Stop sign. Generally the Police/Gendarmerie have been ordered to crack down on motorists as their death and injury toll was far higher than here in the UK. (Though I have never understood why they need such a multitude of different police forces). The other point about the French system is that all police officers (which includes the gendarmerie) have to take an oath to always tell the truth, so in order to challenge anything in a court you have to prove the policeman lied. Having said that, to date I have never had any problem in France, I remember seeing a Gendarme ahead pulling bikes for some reason, he let me past without a problem, only interested in the French ones.

Come to Ireland to tour. Speed cameras set to generous limits, at least 10 % over limit, and are few and far between. The Fixed Charge Notice cannot be enforced in U.K., at least at present.... Traffic and local police wont bother you unless you are really asking for trouble, such as excessive speed in built-up areas. Most Police here give 15-30 % grace margin before note-book appears. Be polite and much will be forgiven. There is a power of arrest for "dangerous driving" but is rarely invoked. Almost no possibility of seeing Garda Plod in rural and small town Ireland, and that accounts for 90% of the place....just saying!

Irish drivers are I pretty crazy! 😀
Couldn’t believe the speeds they do round small lanes and the places they overtake! Can well believe the Garda are lenient! |
