If the wheel diameter is increased by one inch, the bike will sit half an inch higher. This in itself will not affect the shaft and U/J angle, but will decrease the clearance of the tyre (tire) at the top.
The U/J will only be affected if you change the angle of the swing arm by increasing the length of he suspension units. NevadaJohn, I suspect a Foden shaft might be an overkill on a small block Guzzi. But the Spine Frame Guzzi models have two U/Js, one at each end.

Thanks!
So then if both wheels increase in diameter by 1 inch, UJ angle not affected... but then the rear shocks lowered by 1 inch, and front end lowered via sliding down triple trees down the fork 1 inch, the UJ angle still not effected, yet the bike is back to the original height off the ground. The only consideration then is clearence above the wheels, but with the fenders removed, this should be fine..? Am I missing anything? Edited by redrover - 21 Jul 2017 at 18:32 |

Brian, two questions: with a softish setting for touring two up do you think that the increased movement of the swinging arm will add to wear on the UJ? Also do you subscribe to the regular lubrication (at service intervals) of the UJ? Years ago it was recommended to take the UJ off and soak it in oil overnight.

I don't see why a soft setting should affect it, it's major changes in the suspension angle (as in altered suspension leg length) which might be a problem.
Regarding lubrication, the bearings in the units have seals, so immersing in oil is not likely to do much. You really need grease in there anyway. I did have some of that Duckhams chain lube grease, the stuff you heated up to make liquid then put chain in to soak up grease. I did try that with a UJ, but I heated up the UJ first so that t cooled slightly in the liquid grease, the theory being as it cooled it sucked grease into the cups. The same would apply to oil too of course.

Ok, so now that we've hypothetically determined that increasing the diameter of both wheels by one inch without affecting the UJ angle is to equally lower the suspension by one inch (possibly removing the fenders for clearance).
Does anyone know any bikes that have the same rear axle size, but come with an 18x3.5 rim (3.5" is same width as oem on V7). Would it just be easier/cheaper to just use the original hubs to respoke bigger hoops? Edited by redrover - 23 Jul 2017 at 05:03 |

No, increasing the wheel diameter by one inch will only raise the bike height by half an inch.

I would just get it respoked . I am now thinking of doing this to my 16 inch rear wheel on my NTX/xpa 750 Guzzi because of tyre choices

Hey, I would also be interested in this change. Any ideas or links on where to find aftermarket wheels 19" front that would bolt on? Not sure if such an option exist...
