I hope it's the high level of ZDDP. Because that would vindicate for me the advice I've been following from those who purport to know such things.

I've heard the same thing from two separate sources.
Maybe it only slows the demise of the DLC, you can see it's showing signs of breakdown on them. I'd like to try a fresh set, as I don't know what Oil was used before I got it. |

They're the Flat Tappets in my '09 A8 Engined Stelvio.
Thought it was about time I took a look at them. The DLC is starting to go, as you can see, so it looks like I caught them nice and early. I pre-empted them failing, and bought a Roller Kit from Agostinis when I was over there last Sep.

It's OK just me being thick, having no idea what the innards of a stelvio look like I'm having a hard time visuallising where that would be in the engine.

The Stelvio, and the other 8 valve engines, have high level camshafts, so those followers are in the head.
Though I'm glad you asked, because I was having difficulty in working out what the picture was.

The Camshaft sits in there, with a retaining 'Cap' holding it in.
That's looking at the underneath. So in this Diagram, you'd be looking up from where the Head is (Item #1) Camshaft (#16) goes into the space where the lower #6 is. It actuates the Tappets (#13), which push up on the short Rods (#12), which sit inside 'Cups' on the Rocker Arms (#8 & #9), turning them to open the Valves. This might help . . .

Did you get an advantageous price buying it from Agostinis?

So we're looking at something that has worn? The grey edges on the tappets? DLC means case hardening or something similar?

They're a funny colour (to me), but I can just about see scuff marks in the middle. |

So, thats from a 8v Stelvio? By what i've read so far to various forums, its the most (and only) serious failure of the 8v engine - and sooner or latter, happens to ALL flat tappet 8v. The flat tappets should be replaced by roller tappets. If the bike has been serviced corectly (loged by service agent), as the tappets are showing clear signs of failure, the cost for the roller tappet kit should be covered by Guzzi. As the stuff from the tappets is circulated in the oil, it won't heart droppining and cleaning the oil sump and inspecting the oil pump... Search around, there is a LOT of information available.
