Any recommendations for a short excursion to Scotland? We have a works shutdown coming up at the end of Sept so I thought I might use 4 or 5 days to head North if the weather looks reasonable. Not camping so any nice B&B or other accommodation suggestions welcome, as well as routes. Probably taking the loop but maybe the Spada or a last blast on the VFR before it gets sold.

Dunno if you've been up there before Ian but if not you must see Glencoe. There is very good accommodation at, https://www.clachaig.com/.That is the Clachaig Inn in Glencoe.Food, beer, accommodation and if you are lucky, live accoustic music.
Then there's Apple Cross. The road up to The Pass of the Cattle is extremely entertaining. It rises from sea level to 2050 ft thence down t'other side to the village which has a good pub,b&b and a campsite which has little wooden huts so you don't need a tent.I could go on,I love the highlands.Have a good trip I'm not at all envious.

My experience of Scotland is limited to looking round Edinburgh and St Andrews universities with my daughter a few years ago Dave. Thanks for the ideas - I'll get the maps out and have a look, and obviously hope for decent weather. Can't carry my banjo on a bike, so music will be as spectator only.

Follow the weather forecast... ie go where it is dry, there are loads of fantastic roads and scenery... and at this time I would have thought loads of hotels, guest house and B&B rooms.

Enjoy

And if you don't like the weather, just wait a couple of hours, it normally changes. However that can go both ways.

As a Scott, I would say the for scenery and road surfaces and no speed cameras the north west is the place to go. Any where from Loch Lomond ,Stirling Crieff Perth . Pick a road north west of this line and you can't go wrong ( there aren't too many to choose from) saying that every where in Scotland is bonny except for the industrial parts just like anywhere else in the country. Good luck

+1 on follow the weather.

Getting beyond the Glasgow/Edinburgh line has increased the enjoyment of getting up there since I discovered the short ferry crossings from Gourock to Dunoon. I use the first one you get to (heading north up the A710) at MacInnroys Point Ferry which lands at the Hunters Quay end of Dunoon.
From here you can ride through the Argyll Forest Park, around the head of Loch Fyle and your options are open for Mull and/or West Coast/Skye etc from there. (Inverarry) Running through Argyll and Bute is a gem compared to what can be trials and tribulations of the A82 / Loch Lomond stretch.
There is a good camp site (with lodges) owned by a biker called Tim at Ardnastang near to the head of Loch Sunnart but maybe not best time of year for camp site life. He does have a comfy communal lodge however which makes it a popular venue for ABR, all seasons, forum meets.
Cheers, Tony

Two years ago I did a nice little 3 night stopover trip in Scotland.

Left Durham and headed up the A68 and the first night stop was Pitlochry

Day 2 we headed west eventually getting up to Ullapool on the west coast and then headed over to the east coast and stayed in Tain.

Day 3 we headed south and had an overnight stop in Callander.

Great trip and obviously we had various coffee stops and detours etc ( Applecross being one of them ) but even though the weather was less than perfect I still thoroughly enjoyed it and may have another shot at something similar this month if I can get the escape tunnel dug by then.Thumbs Up

No, the weather forecast was terrible for the weekend so I had a couple of rides out from home into Wales. Have to be next year now.

Are you at Stafford this weekend Dave? I'll be there on Fri for setting up and Saturday on either MGCGB stand upstairs or VMCC stand downstairs.
