I think you've done a fantastic job. In my opinion, the 850T is already a good-looking bike, and it's a classic Guzzi, havimng being designed as the touring version of the V7 Sport. You've carried out a nip and tuck of the original bike and it's come out the other side looking updated, modernised but classic at the same time. Great job, and enjoy!

@italianmotor - cheers!  yes, agree, and that perfectly sums up what my project goal was.  as period and stock and classic as possible while introducing some subtle cafe styling.  given what I started with, however, almost anything was going to be an improvement....   the bones were there, and I'd hoped to do them justice.

this is my fourth Italian bike but first Guzzi.  and first attempt at a project build/resto.  I cleaned and re-used as many parts as possible.  the only things I didn't do myself were paint (tank, etc), powdercoat and chrome.  oh, and I installed a new wiring harness from Greg Bender, and a modern reg/rec and relays.  cutting the front and rear fenders was one of the hardest decisions, but fairly easy to do in the end and worth it to me for the outcome.

many thanks for all other replies as well !!

Update:    build is 'finally final' Big smile  (although are they ever really?)

I'd still been chasing a few items since last post, to ensure a 'no excuses' fit, finish and rideability to both daily living standards and my project specs.  I can finally call this one complete (however the lack of constant moto-distraction and time on my hands now is driving me nuts).

Finished sporadically during the past months were:
  • fabricated and welded shift lever bracket
  • shortened stock brake lever (tossed the Tarozzi lever)
  • modified seat pan and foam; fabricated new seat cover (including logo lettering)
  • fitted longer progressive springs up front
  • fitted smaller 12mm m/c to improve stock braking
  • lighter throttle/carb springs to ease 'gorilla grip'
  • replaced flaking cylinder & piston
  • chased and "rectified" a charging issue (faulty r/r)
  • added a bar-end mirror and discreet turn signals (all of which actually work!)

Bike starts quickly and settles to a stable idle; shifts, accelerates and stops without drama and gives me confidence that I will get where I'm going and back without trouble (there, I've gone and done it now....).

cheers, all!  this was a fairly big test for my first project rebuild.  learned a lot and appreciated the help and encouragement from folks on this and other forums.
yes, lots of background in reverse chronology on my blog; although it may be a little dry and boring and full of angst for some...Smile

short answer on tank was the PO (or PO before him) unsuccessfully pounded it in with a hammer.  I actually liked the knee dishing and asked my painter to do something with it.  he dreaded the prospect but we were both happy with the outcome.  it may not be immediately obvious that I moved the original stock tank badge up above the 'line' and slightly forward as well (to my eye, it balances out the large space better this way); I had to strip and repaint the badges by hand too.  and, the cap is sourced from an auto parts store since the PO had also cut off the stock cap mounting tab.  I notched the filler and include a rubber donut under the cap to get it to 'lock' into place.

that seat was a bear; eventually bought the fabric and sewed it from scratch myself.

oh, and I see now in an early post on this build that I referred to the side covers as 'aftermarket'.  in fact they are stock covers on stock boxes.  a PO cut them back along the vent line so that they fit nicely in the triangle of the frame.  took me a while to realize this since they were chromed when I got it.  after paint I fitted new badges and lock mechanisms.  turned out as a good visual element for this build.
there are more stock (but modified) pieces on this bike than maybe assumed at first glance besides the tank and side covers (front and rear fenders for example).  again, I tried to only molest stuff that was already molested....
