The problem with buying from far afield is the cost of shipping and import duty/vat.

i like the sound of the replating as a cost effective repair
talking of the coating - how thick is it ? |

Coating thickness varies from a minimum of .003" to a maximum of .040" The cylinder has to be perfectly round before plating so I suppose it depends on how much material they have to machine off. Apparently the adhesion to aluminium is greater than the aluminium molecules stick to each other! I've no idea how they mask the rest of the cylinder when the electro-plating is going on but I expect I'll find out before long.

So if they machine the bores true, assuming they are not already, how do they make them fit your pistons?
I have also heard conflicting opinions as to whether rings for chrome bores are good for nikasil. |

That's a good point John but I don't know the answer, yet. My reasons for considering getting the bores plated are simple;
Nobody's got any new ones Langcourt Engineering don't appear to have pissed anyone off Weston's only half an hour away! I haven't got a lot of spare time and as the German company's price for two sets barrels and pistons was around £450 including gaskets and postage, I'm now considering waiting until next year, it isn't as though I don't have a bike to ride. I suppose I'm just trying to avoid "wasting" an MOT! I'd be ever so grateful for any more info on Nikasil coating.. |

I've finally decided to buy new barrels and pistons for my ailing GT. The exchange rate is favourable and I've just placed an order with H.M.B (thanks to Dukedesmo) which with gaskets and postage, comes to just over £400. I've ordered them on-line and assume that they have accepted the order and will just send them when available.
My decision was based on the uncertainty of the piston rings' condition and suitability and in any case it still leaves the door open for re-plating the originals if Plan A fails. I'll be quiet now until the parcel arrives/doesn't arrive. |

Seems like a lot but I suppose thinking back to when I last bought two piston & barrel sets, about 30 years ago it probably was like a week's wages!

My Ambassador is here and I'm 99% certain it has chrome cylinders. I contacted Gutsibits and initially they thought they had sourced a Gilardoni kit, but it turned out not to be. I have ordered a set, but they are not in production again till early spring. My Eldorado ones arrived at the same time.
I'm sticking with Gutsibits as they have given excellent service and I like to support British companies where possible. |

Since placing my order for new cylinders etc, HMB have refunded my money basically citing the unreliability of the suppliers and have asked me to re-order when they have stock. It's very nice of them and I understand why but it would mean checking their website every day or miss the boat. I've since spoken to Mandy at Stein Dinse and she's told me to "make my order at the end of year" It's not long now, the saga continues..

Gutsibits just announced limited availability of "barrel kits at Gilardoni in Mandello and we can supply to special order
kits for the 850T, T3, 850 GT, T4, V7 Special, Ambassador".
They predict that no dust will settle on this stock. |

Well, after what appears to have been a couple of eternities, a big box arrived from Stein Dinse yesterday containing my cylinder kits. It all looks very shiny and I can't wait to get the ailing V7 Special off the bike bench to make room for the flaking 850GT. I'll be really pissed off if that flake of chrome was already in the bucket when I drained the oil!
