EV1100.
Opie oils suggest a fully synthetic but this fly's in the face of what the advice is generally with older BMW's which I also run So just curious to know what you guys are actually using and indeed if there any pitfalls with using synthetic.

Personally , semi synthetic is adequate for the metallurgy of our engines.
There is a school of thought that feels leaks may ensue from fully synthetic. I've always used old school oil in my cali 1100i and V50. My newer V7 750 is a more advanced oil however needing fully synthetic different grade SG MA2 , but then it's a 2019 mettalurgy

Want an answer from the experts look on oilman thread or go to Opie oils you get 10% discount with GUZZIRIDERS expert advice delivered to your door .... Hardly ever use any one else for both bikes and both cars ...Always order new filters and oil as I do oil changes
The only Guzzi on the road needing specialist oil is the 1100 EV hydro valve ....

It will depend on which model and the age of the bike. Older models will generally weep oil past the seals if fully synthetic oil is used without replacing all those seals. So any good quality oil of the correct viscosity rating would be fine. The modern ones require a wider viscosity range, often 10W60, so you have to use at least a semi synthetic oil.

That's interesting because this is exactly what BMW airhead exerts say. OK I'm going to go with a good quality mineral.

I did indeed contact Opie who suggest fully synthetic. Seems like overkill for a lazy twin, especially with an old fart like me on board rarely going past 70mph.

sounds like an old school 10-40 semi synthetic is what you need.
My cali 1100i says 20-50 in the "old" original book but predominantly 10-40 semi synthetic is advised for it I always cast my mind back to when the car/bike was made and designed - old engineering principles and manufacturing tolerances needed the type of oils then and these can be retained even now (as someone said earlier about leaks from super modern oil in old oil seals) find some 10-40 oil ----- it can be the same oil as your car as the clutch is separate (unlike other motorbike engines where the clutch swims in the oil), so if you have some in the garage , saves buying some more !! put your own bike in here mine says power 1 4T 10-40 Part synthetic)

What year is your EV pj? as far as i know the fully synth hi ester 5-40 are the hydraulic valve EV the newer 1100's 10-40 semi ...the older V1000 i have run my V1000 on 20/50 for yrs and 200 k miles nowadays i use the 10/40 part synth as it has had the newer seals popped in when it last got taken apart does not seem to leak, breather will leave a few drips after a long run.

It's a 2002, nut bolt tappets. Mine does sound a little clattery at the top end despite the clearances being spot on, so I'm now thinking oil

The cure for the valve clatter is ear plugs. Works every time.

I followed you link and it recommended Castrol POWER1 Racing 4T 10W-40 10W40 for my bike. Which surprised me because it's Fully Synthetic. Also, is Opie Oil something to do with Castrol. When I followed the online sale link it took me to ebay where it states Castrol Approved Store Opie Oils Limited.

Opie are just a place that sells Castrol products. Don't think there is any closer tie.

There is racing power 1 which is fully synthetic.
But also an ordinary power 1 4T which is semi. Remember an ordinary 10 40 is usable also
