    Posted: 18 May 2020 at 18:32
Hi Folks,

I've had my gorgeous Breva 750 for 9 months now and in preparation for the easing of the lockdown rules I decided tio change the oil.  Now, without checking the grade of oil before going I went to my Guzzi dealer near Alyesbury.  I just asked for the oils needed to do the engine, gearbox and bevel box.  They sold me 3 litres of Motul fully synthetic 10W40 and 1 litre of Motul fully synthetic 75W90 transmission oil.  Plus of course the oil filter and they gave me some new crush washers.

Engine oil change went well until I found none of the crush washers were the right size.  No real problem I will replace them next time and all the oil stayed inside the engine.  However, after wandering around the forum I am now worried that the Guzzi dealer has sold me the wrong stuff!!  For a start the engine only takes 1.8 litres and they surely cannot expect me to put 10W40 in th gear box?

Any advise/comments gratefully accepted.

Hope you are all enjoying the uncharacteristic weather.

I know my 2018 V7 111 stipulates fully synthetic 10w60 and takes about 2 litres.
Thinking about it , for 2 litres to whizz around getting hot and bothered and working hard , it needs the right stuff in it.

Is my v7 derived from your Breva small block?

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the reply.

I believe the V7 is a follow on from the Breva.  Yeah, I suspect they have just sold me something off the shelf because they didn't have stock of the right stuff.  I am so gullible, I really thought a Guzzi dealer would look after me.  Looks like I've wasted a few bob and will have to do it again.  Oh well, lesson learned.

Thanks Richard

Not possible to get a refund ? Or change it for correct stuff.

Makes you wonder what they'd throw in a bike at a service?  Dosn't it.

It is indeed a sad state when specialists don't know their stuff or am I just cynical?

I'll try for a refund on the stuff I haven't used but they are just gonna say 'the 10W40 will be fine mate'.

We're only cynical because they make us that way.

Have a word with him.

Well if you look in the owners manual for the B750, you will see it says 5W40 oil for the engine.

P81 in the English version.

By  the way, there is also -

Thanks Brian, it was noticing this that prompted the query.  Was wondering if the 10W40 was going to cause catastrophic engine failure!

Cheers

5W40 to 10W40 will make no difference, maybe it will run slightly more freely immediately after a cold winter start, but no more.

Thanks for your input Petros GR.  I have gone back to the Guzzi dealer and also sought advise from a mate who is an auto diagnostic tech.  They both say that there is no problem running the bike with the 10W40, especially during the summer.  In fact the dealer parts bloke insists 10W40 is what I should be running.  I will however change it back before the winter which is when I usually do a quick post season service.  I have not changed the transmission fluid yet and I will order the Guzzi quoted oil for it.

Just noticed your location - I m very jealous.  We are having great weather here in the UK but would rather be where you are.  Greece is by far my favourite holiday location.  We honeymooned in Kefalonia and have been to Santorini, Skiathos, Corfu, Mikinos, Crete and Athens.

Actually you have that the wrong way round.
The higher viscosity of the 10W60 would be better for summer use if anything.
But unless we get an exceptionally hot summer, and you get stuck in traffic at the same time, then 10W40 will be fine.
If, on a hot day, you notice the oil light flickering at idle, then change to the 10W60.
Brian.
