Hi all
Thinking of changing fork oil on my breva 1100. Has anyone used heavier oil than suggested to improve dampning ? My front end is very sloppy especially on corners with rough surfaces.tried adjusting but no real difference.new tyres and correct pressure. Any advice. Regards craig |

If the damping adjustment provided doesn't make any difference then slightly heavier oil might help. At least you will know the right amount is in there.

I always go up a weight or two with Fork Oil, I like a 'firmer front' (oooooerrrr missus, etc).
Also, the Oil doesn't last forever, it deteriorates with age/mileage, just like all other Oils. |

ye you can put heavier oil and a bit more volume. it certainly stiffens the front end up. I put the Hyperpro progressive springs in a while ago and they also made a bit of a difference.

Altering the volume of Oil doesn't affect the Damping.
The Air-Gap above the Oil acts like a Spring. Less Air = a 'firmer' feel (like a stronger Spring). More Air = a 'softer' feel (weaker Spring). It's useful for 'fine-tuning' the Fork Pre-Load, if you don't have Pre-Load Adjusters. You can go a little way, each way, from the recommended level. If the Oil Level is much too high (very Small Air Gap), you could risk blowing the Seals on full Compression. If it's way too low (Larger Air Gap), it'll probably feel way too soft. I personally wouldn't go much more than +/-15% or so. |

Depends what's in there at the moment really.
Do you know? Is there more than one weight listed in the Manual? Might be worth contacting this guy, if possible. http://motoguzzimackers.com/2017/07/28/breva-fork-oil-change/ |

The specified range of oils is between 5 and 20 w I am using 15 weight which suits me fine. the volume of oil is specified at 400 ml I went up to 425ml without any adverse effects. I agree that the air space has the action of effecively adding preload to the fork action by replacing a compressible medium (air) with a less compressible oil. However the seat of the pants effect is stiffening the suspension. In the same way shortening the spring will stiffen suspension without altering the stiffness of the spring material.

I've never needed one, just tap lightly all around the seal to get it to seat evenly.
