You have been lucky Ken,others not so fortunate.
Guzziology highlights it as a known irritation.

Thanks chaps. It appears that this is quite a common problem, especially on 2002 models it seems. What is it with Guzzi and springs? The 5 speed boxes are prone to broken centralizing springs apparently.

had this with my V11 le mans it was the linkage needed some lube ...the things that cause this in order of easy to omg .... 1 shaft from pedal undo lube 2 actual linkage come undone check and re fit  3 the splined shaft on end of gearbox worked loose and can come off ...refit tighten bolt ...Had ALL these things happen ...finally pawl spring but if that has broken usually the gear pedal sticks and does not return to centre ...hope this helps

Looks very much like you have it Brian.I checked on the V11 Le Mans forum which has a very good illustrated procedure showing how to change the pawl spring. The shift return spring is also covered.Access to the springs is gained through a cover plate on the gearbox case as on the four speed box.
It's a pity that the same is not true of the five speed.
Anyway, surgery is ongoing as we speak (write)

Otherwise it could be the pawl spring.

Thanks cugsy. I haven't even seen the bike.It belongs to a friend of my brother-in-law who phoned me because I have Guzzis. I don't even know if the six speed box is similar to the five speed. Now if it was a four speed I'd know my way around it.

I've just received a phone call regarding a 2002 V11 Sport,a machine I know nothing about.Apparently the guy took it for a ride, all was well then whilst in second gear he tried to change up but to no avail. He then tried to change down with the same result. So he rode it twenty miles home in second gear. The gear pedal feels "Normal" no flopping about which would suggest an external linkage failure so I'm guessing some kind of trouble with the selector mechanism.
All suggestions welcome. Thanks .
