When I asked on the Met Police Bikesafe what speed should you filter up to, they replied that over 50mph you don't need to filter as you're already doing 50.

Strangest thing. One day rattling home on the bike and as I got to a roundabout I looked in the mirror to see a big triumph explorer thing blatting towards me from behind. I set off and he pissed passed me on the roundabout about 2 " from my right elbow.  Tit I thought.

I have a twunt on a sportsbike did some crazy over/undertaking on my work commute he did a real close undertake then had to stop at lights I kicked out the sidestand went over to him and told him if he ever got within punching distance I would take him out with the big guzzi he has never come within a whole lane ever again ....6 weeks after our "little chat" .... slip up to M1 from Leics he had run up the inside of a car as one was moving on from the M69 crossing the chevroms in his Audi, looked like he had caught matey on 1 side and the car he was tooling past had hit the other, he didn't look too happy not seen him for 8-10 weeks since .......

It's not so much the speed at which you filter/lane split, it's more the way you do it and the speed differential.
A bike doing 80 when the general flow is 40 (and I have seen it) is in my opinion, lunacy, but going past at about 10 mph faster is often pretty safe.

I remember a friend of mine boasting about doing 70 between crawling lanes of traffic on London's North Circular. Needless to say he can't ride any more.
Brian.

Better 5 minutes late in this world than years early in the next.

A while back I filtered (fully panniered up) for miles down a dual section of the A46 - don't the cats eyes get on you nerves Wink

Some people got out of the way and got a leg wave as thanks and some didn't, maliciously or not, who knows

Those that didn't I rejoined the main lane got past them and carried on filtering

I appreciate the OPs irritation, and been there myself, but the F'wits will always be out and about and its probably better for you own sanity not to engage with them
