The thin ring nut is there to lock the large exhaust nut in place. The original nut is notorious for coming loose and wrecking the threads in the exhaust port,as I know to my cost,
Excuse me for saying so but it looks to me as though your new nut could go further into the head.

After more than a year I have realized that the downpipe on the new nut is loose, it moves forward a bit and more worryngly it looses fumes.
I couldn't find a proper guide on how to install it and very probably I have made some mistakes.
Does anyone have a "how to" tip?
Thanks

I periodically tighten the exhaust nuts on my Loops. I can often get a few degrees rotation on them. You could replace the gasket ring then check for tightness several times over the next few hundred miles having first undone the lock nut. When re tightening it does no harm to slacken the other exhaust mounting hardware to allow the pipe to move in if only a fraction. And if possible tighten up when the head is hot!

Exactly the same as the old Norton twin exhaust, and that had to be tightened periodically.

Its also worth getting right in and having a good poke about in cylinder head exhaust port just to make sure their are no old copper gaskets stuck in there.
Cheers Ian

The washer goes over the end of the pipe up against the flange and is then trapped between flange and the inside of the exhaust port. Or put in the washer first then push the pipe in followed by the nut. Do up the nut tightly then screw the locknut against the cylinder head.

Do you think the nut should be turned in more.

Tun it is as far as it will go at which point the exhaust pipe should be firmly attached to the head with no looseness or shake. Then do up the lock nut. It does look to me as if it should go further in. Your photo above of the nut well in without a locknut and wired looks better to me. If the lock nut is preventing the main (sleeve) nut from holding the pipe fully home then I would leave it out. My Loops don't have lock nuts, they didn't come from the factory with lock nuts and they're fine so long as you keep them regularly checked for tightness. The damage to threads occurs when they are not monitored and come loose.

That nut doesn't look as if it is screwed in enough to be safe. Looks like it's only in a couple of turns at most, which is very likely to strip the thread in the port.
Unless that new nut is much longer than I think.
