Ok, nobody else has mentioned it but as the majority of us are likely to be in the high risk community are we worried ?

i have a member of staff who came to work yesterday with a heavy cough.  i knew his mother lives in Italy and had been over for a visit.  on speaking to him he told me his stepfather, grandfather and some kids in the family group all had cold like symptoms.

his mum and step father had flown to Milan for a week before they came over, flying out just before it was locked down.  they have now gone home via Rome

i decided to send him home to contact NHS 111 and get advice .  He was told to call his doctor who took details and said he would be referred on for testing.

The health authorities contacted him today and told him as his parents weren't tested  as positive he would not be tested. we live in Scotland so there is not a lot of pressure on the system - why not test him

they came from a high incident area, several members of the family have symptoms - but he will not be tested.  i have told him to stay away for the ten days and keep his fingers crossed.

Somehow i think it is all going to get worse if that's the best we can do

It is going to get worse. I took the decision yesterday to cancel a meeting scheduled for next week which would have included a number of high-risk people - eg older (70+), compromised immune systems eg transplant patients etc. Some people thought it was an overreaction but it just seemed to me daft to go ahead especially as the meeting would have been on hospital premises with ill people in the vicinity.

I think we have barely started on the journey and who knows where it will take us....

Well our Health Minister has tested positive, so I don't think the precautions taken by Ian and Jim could be described as overreaction. The House of Commons and members of the Cobra Committee shall probably all need checking.

Annie and I had this last year Dec'18-March '19, it was awful could not get up to the loo in 1 go actually brought in the porta potty from our camper, by the time they took any precautions it was already out there thousands die every yr from 'flu, Yet there are still 'planes flying and remember ALL the parcel companies are delivering stuff from ALL over The World daily ......this is way more likely to be either man made or caused by ignorance. ...YEARS ago there was a TV series based on such a virus "Survivours" Heck even |H G Wells pointed it out in War of The Worlds. The modern Global Economy allows a virus to spread ....... Do the very simple school kid maths 1-10-100 etc ..... it is likely to be a very interesting Spring/Summer stay safe folks

Covid-19 is not what you had last year Ken. It also cannot be carried on parcels.

But the amount of international travel certainly doesn't help.

Surprised your health service decided not to test your member of staff Jim, if he had been in close contact with people who had just come over from Italy it seems a no-brainer to me.

Fingers crossed folks.
Brian.

"Her in doors" was a professional in infection control and not notable for panicking but she has put a box of tinned and long life food stuff away in a box just in case one of us gets sick and we can't get out. No point in being brave as we are both at a risky age so we are avoiding crowds and keeping up the hand washing. Take care out there.

We heard today from one of our old Carers a young Polish girl who has a Chinese boy friend.

She had been back two days.

She said it's very scary in China.

We are never ready or organised for situations.

The Health Minister was soon tested but not the ordinary Tom,Dick or Harry.

It's very scary in China, partly because the powers that be refused to accept there was any infection problem for weeks. They eventually locked down Wuhan, a city of 11.5 million, but by that time 5 million had left the area. The doctor who first tried to warn people was arrested, and since strangely died of said infection aged 30 with no underlying problems.

And you say we are never ready?

Many many thousands have been tested too by the way, 1500 per day, but the capacity is being upped to 10,000 per day.

However, a cough by itself is unlikely to be this virus, you will note the Health Minister had a high temperature prior to that dry cough starting.

I wonder if Corona Beer is getting a boom in sales?

Corona was lemonade when I was a kid.

Well we do have one advantage, a full face helmet should help to keep the bugs out.
