As the sun was shining this morning and I have a group ride organised for Weds morning (it will rain - I know); time to take the Convert out for a spin around the Essex lanes.
Sadly, it was not to be' not even a "click no crank' situation - nada, nich, nothing. Now the key has 3 positions and I know it can be removed in the mid and left, but locks in on the right, so I suspected the furthest left position that I've been leaving it in has some systems left live (like the parking lights) even though nothing is illuminated. Throwing the battery charger on for a bit doesn't improve matters and its showing a healthy 12.7 volts off the charger. Why is the tank always full when it needs to come off? Nothing obvious inside the headlamp shell, although here is a blue Scotchloc that looks older than Moses father. Take off the keyswitch and have a poke inside with the multimeter reveals no volts at the red terminal, battery connection is tight (but has mucho evidence of jump start cable usage). The live cable disappears behind the fusebox, so after giving it a good wiggle, i go to fetch a pair of 10mm spanners to undo the battery terminals - whats this the rear light has come on! Ah-Ha! must be a dodgy connection on that hefty live cable I've been wiggling. Sure enough - all is revealed when the battery is out. I'm so impressed, if I had tried to make an entire electrical system run from a single 6mm piggy back crimp (mounted vertically) and it held up for 45 years - I'd deserve a medal. I know I know...I need to do the relay mod so the keyswitch doesn't have to carry the whole electrical load too. |
