pulling the plugs on my ‘new to me’ Convert reveals the left one is spot on bu the right is sooty.
Looking up the pilot screw settings shows they should be 1.5 turns out - pretty much standard for all carbs. Checking the bike itself reveals the left is over 2.5 turns out and the right a mere half turn off the stop. Ah ha, so I set them both to 1.5 turns out and go for a spin - she’s not happy. Break out the old colourtune kit and sure enough the left needs 2 and 1/8 turns out but the right a mere 3/4 turn out. Methinks I have either a damaged pilot screw seat, a float that’s not fulfilling its job description or even a choke enrichener circuit not shutting off properly. Further investigations to follow, but should the cognoscenti have insights to offer, all info gratefully received.

Could be choke plunger for sure but my V1000 same engine the 2 are different .... If it still has the square carbs they will be getting past their sell by date .....The only reason bikes in Europe still had those was a money saving exercise by Guzzi ... bikes of the same era sent to the USA had the round carbs fitted as they are way more efficient easier to tune and give a bit extra go ....
Often the cold start thing does stick they need pulling and cleaning especially if bike has been stood a while. The delorto tuning guide is your friend

Eurocarbs in Reading, knowledgeable bunch.
Just have your carb number/ model when you ring. Or gutzibits, mine were 6 quid for choke plungers each.

It may be worth checking valve clearances, if tight they can cause problems with low down carburation.

Tip I picked up on choke plungers from the Morini experts. Best 'stored' with the plungers open, i.e. as if choke on. Otherwise the rubber an develop a 'set' from sitting on its mount and not seal perfectly. Worth a try.

The new choke plungers arrived, they are some sort of pot metal rather than the original brass.
The old ones had definitely been ‘got at’ by the ethanol content of modern petrol - soo how the rubber base has swollen. I have yet to do the Colourtune as the ignition points and dodgy condensers have been keeping me busy.

If you had the right material you could replace those inserts.

I would not worry about the cheap metal used as long they are made the right size. If Delorto were making the carbs now, they probably wouldn't use brass, it just the way of bean counters and improved capabilities of modern production.

Well the carbs have both been cleaned, I even removed the taps from the tank and gave that a good swill out (needed doing). Despite the tap filters in the tank the carb banjo filters had a fair amount of crap showing too. The float bowls just had a wee bit of staining with no water or rust residue.
I definitely think the RH carb was flooding a little so I’ve polished both the needle valve seats (usual trick, small wooden dowell sharpened in a pencil sharpener and used like a twizzle stick). Anyhoo, the Colourtune shows correct mix at 1.25 turns out on both sides now. I just want to install some new condensers next to the coils before the tank goes back on.

I have a pair of square VHB carbs off my V1000. I swapped them for the round PHF ... Guzzi actually did put the round carbs on most of the V1000 engines except the ones in Europe only because the VHB' were cheaper but they are getting to be hard to find parts
The PHF carbs have many advantages, easier to set up for sure
