All these rec/reg units use the case for the earth return, so a good earth is essential. Paint on the frame is enough to spoil things.

Hi John
A few things to check/try: Stator resistance~ 0.2~0.3 ohms - Set at 200 it states 1.4 Idle alternator o/p ~ 20 v ac - Running at 19v 4000 rpm o/p ~ 60v ac - Running at 56v If these are all good check the rec/reg o/p at the dc connector ~ 13.5~ 14.5 - Do I have to connect everything back up and check this at the battery? On my cables on the loom 1 connector has 2 yellow. The other 2 Blue, a red and a Green On the new regulator with the same connector 2 red & white & 2 greens The red and whites seem to be going to the 2 blues. Could these be in the wrong connectors and the Blues should go with the 2 red & whites? Thank you John |

Thanks

Was there no information with the regulator at all?
The two yellow on the loom are the AC input from the alternator. Have a look at this diagram (courtesy of Carl Allison). Item 18 is the regulator. 2 yellow wires are from the alternator. the red/green is the main 12v + output to the battery. There might be two wires which connect together for some reason. the 2 green wires connect to earth or frame. Edited by Brian UK - 19 Jun 2017 at 21:42 |

Hi John,
Those voltage readings are good but the stator is much higher than expected. Anyway let's keep going. Brian's info is good, the colour scheme you mention is totally unknown to me, I would ask your supplier for technical info or a refund/exchange. If you want to carry on with what you have so far: Connect the ac (2 x yellow) to the R/R. Run the engine and measure for dc output at the "strange" coloured connector without it connected to the bike harness. This is where a couple of jumper leads with a male one end and a female on the other come in handy to keep you away from the hot exhaust. This will allow you to determine the polarity of the wires you're dealing with so we can move on. If you get 13.5/14.5 you then need to connect it to harness and measure at the battery. Ensure that the wire you prove to be positive goes to the red/green cable in the harness. For info, I think on the standard harness MG use two lots of commoned connectors to spread the dc charging/load current out a bit so as to lessen the risk of poor connections and x/s heat. Hope this is making sense. John ps a bit late to mention it but you do have a good battery in your meter and you did check it for zero on ohms? Edited by Scousus maximus - 20 Jun 2017 at 18:46 |

Hi all,
I think my towel is in. I have checked everything suggested but still no charge to the battery. Looks like I am going to have to find a bike auto electrician as I am getting nowhere. Does anyone know one in the Edinburgh/West Lothian area? Thank you all for your invaluable input. John John |

Sounds familiar to my problem. I connected one wire to the red/white then to battery. One wire to the green then to battery and it works. Figure must be to much resistance in original wiring.

All,
Sorry I am so late with this but my Breva works again. Took it to Super Roy @ James Allan in Edinburgh, were it was discovered that the stator and housing had all corroded together forcing a short/earth dump. Housing cleaned and a new £94 stator from M&P and we are charging. Woohoo!! Now just having trouble bleeding my bake brake. Another section and day..... John |

I thought one of the tests suggested was to check resistance of the stator windings and check for a short to earth.
