Never had a problem with RAC, however not had any more old bikes since 2015, so rules might have changed since then; I know there was no recovery from abroad if vehicle is over 10 years old. Maybe that aspect is what you're asking about? But was fine if within the UK, or UK mainland at least.

2 answers:

1. If you insure with someone like Peter James - which I highly recommend - you will get free UK / EU breakdown cover included.

2. I have a Nationwide Flexplus bank account which for £13/month gives full UK/EU breakdown cover for any vehicle I happen to be in - as well as worldwide travel insurance.

I use AutoAid. They cover cars and bikes and I've called them out twice over the past few years, both times for my 1950's British bikes, so obviously age of vehicle doesn't affect the service. Also, cover includes any vehicle in which the policy holder is travelling, which I think is pretty good.
As per George S, I'm with RH but haven't used the breakdown service yet.

These days because I don`t do long journeys on the bike my breakdown cover is my bike trailer and an understanding `better half` with a tow car

I get full AA cover through my Lloyd's account. Never heard of any restrictions on UK cover. I will check though.

AA covers the user, not specified vehicles.
