The very important topic of fluids has been debated in so many threads but my googlefoo is so bad that I can't find what I am looking for.
Can you direct me to the thread with the answer to: I just bought a 1978 convert that has sat for 12 years. I am going to replace all the fluids. In 2018, what should I use?
Or if you know the answer, that would be cool, too.

I have the manual specs
10w50 for engine
90 for gear/rear drive
Dexron for converter/forks,

but science and stuff have happened since 1978. Something might be better.

David

(ps. I got the electrics sorted. That was satisfying.)

Why deny yourself the pleasure of being stuck in 1978 ? SmileIsn't that what the Convert is for ?

15w50 LiquiMoly works very well in my 79 T3, as do 90 gear oil (plus a dash of Marly GX) and Dextron in the fork.

The main thing with engine oil is to be very gentle 'till it's warmed up, works in 1978 or 2018  Thumbs Up

The important bit which hasn't changed is the viscosity rating. If 50 is the hot rating then any 15w/50 or 10W/50 will be fine.
Modern GL rated gear oils are better than older ones so adding moly is not so important.

Call this the best oil discussion thread? Boring! Where are all the endless arguments about who makes the oiliest oil ever, or on the benefits of adding honey and creosote to gear box oil? It's a sell out!Angry

Ever heard about warming up ?

Start gently, build up the revs, work your way up to the red mist...Evil Smile

(Creosote is at best a poor substitute for linseed oil IMO)

It's all about ZDDP content. Wouldn't have been an issue in 1978, but often short now as it knacks catalytic converters. You want it for your flat tappets.

See - this thread is picking up already.

I have my doubts about zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, always had them since the tribofilm formation mechanism is not obvious to the naked eye.

Au contraire mon ami! (And I didn't mention Brexit by the way)

EU contibutions for 2015

UK 12.57% as a percentage of GDP third largest contributor to EU funds at 2,849.35 b$

Belgium 4.05% as a percentage of GDP seventh largest contributor to EU funds at 454.687 b$

No wonder folks in the EU don't want the UK to leave.
