V50II
The battery light has decided to remain on, even at high revs. I’ve checked and the battery is not charging when the engine is reved. Am I right in thinking: Regulator Alternator Could there be something else I’m overlooking.

First thing to check is that the brushes are making contact with the rotor slip rings. Then check the spade terminals into the harness are good. If you are able to check the resistance of the rotor winding even better, should be about 4 ohms and no short to earth.

If it helps, I noticed that the light slightly dims when I rev the bike?

What Brian said I had a brush hang up in the holder so losing contact on the slip ring same symptoms. Can light the bulb up but no charge.

I’ve had the unit on the bench, cleaned the brushes and all the contact places, stretched the springs. Cleaned the rings, tested resistance 3.4 ohms. As in the book.
After all that, the light slightly dims when reved.

OK, can you check what if any volts are at the brushes, ignition on, engine not running. Won't be 12v, but should be something. No volts suggest either a wiring fault between the regulator and brushes, or a possible fault in the regulator.

If you replace Reg get one of the solid state variable ones they fit the same bracket as the tin CEV and plug in got mine from Towzatronics ...I believe Gutsibits stock them, on the Bosch system never replace the big old diode board they are used still in marine engines as they are bullet proof, check the large spade connector on the diode board BUT disconnect the battery when checking anmy connections as if you do short it that will kill it dead
There is a charge cct check in The Shed on Gutsibits, the other item that does fail is the rotor

Does the solid-state unit you are talking about occupy the place of the current rectifier or the regulator? Does that then free up some space but would then be left vacant, not a bad thing I suppose.

It would take the place of the regulator. 0.24v is far too little. Can you trace back to the regulator and check the same voltage is there? That would probably mean the regulator has a fault. Wiring diagram might be of use.

Not a combined unit. The original rectifier remains, the solid state bit is the regulator. |

I see, I been looking around and I have found some 7 wire 3 phase regulator/rectifiers for quite a reasonable price. I’m wondering if it’s possible to fashion an expectable replacement.
Only because Guzzi bits (as great as they are) want £130 ouch !!

There are two basic types of alternator. The permanent magnet rotor and the excited field rotor. The Bosch is the latter type. Any replacement would have to be the correct type. The 3 phase bit is correct, but I don't know about the other part. If they are advertised as suitable for the Bosch, then fine.
