Getting (slightly) back on track:

I bought one of these a year or so ago as I thought it may work for magneto timing (it doesn't as it reacts too slowly). But it does have a capacitor test function which I haven't tried yet.....

Digital testers do tend to react slowly, especially the cheaper ones.

Do you think it would work testing capacitors and would a numpty be able to work it? (serious question)
For timing mags, the magneto guys sell a gadget with a light that comes on when the points open. It's great, no more fag papers

I will try it with a capacitor if I remember it when I'm in the garage (fat chance when I usually forget why I went in there in the first place).

Yes, I know about the commercial ones but I'm too much of a cheapskate to buy one. Rather than fag papers I use kitchen foil which is generally .001" thick and doesn't rip in half when you tug it....

As it's raining I popped into the garage to try it out with an old capacitor I had lying about (no idea where it came from). Results:

Close up of display. I suspect the resistance value is due to sloppy ad hoc connections.

And this is a power resistor I found:

A useful little tool for the price. The capacitor showed the same value whichever way I connected it.

A foil capacitor would measure the same both ways.

Quite a neat little tool for almost no money.
