Couple of nice old Ambassadors on Ebay. They seem to be coming out of the woodwork.

Do you mean the barn find? Have a look at the thread: " he must be joking" from a couple of days ago.

Excuse my ignorance as I'm not up to speed on the older V7/Ambassador range, do they all have chrome barrels, and going by NeilD's quote above, I take it they can be changed for other barrels, if so what barrels? I am considering an older Guzzi after my 1000S flew the nest last month and am picking up info here and there. If I'd known my 1000S was being bought a few months ago, I didn't advertise it, someone contacted me out the blue, I may have bought Manxie's. Also just had a look for adverts and can't find them, anyone got a link?

As you probably know, mine sold a little while ago, it is in the UK and the buyer is on this forum so you may come across it at some point.
I didn`t know too much about them when I bought my Ambo but the "chrome" cylinders refer to the linings of the barrels. After time they break up and make their way into the motor which can obviously cause serious issues. These can be replaced, which mine had, expensive but have to be done Still not seen the red Ambo on flea bay

The red bike ended last night at £4100, it didn't make the reserve. He then relisted it with a lower reserve, now it's gone. There was no mention of the barrels being replaced in the description or I might have been tempted....

There you go Robert. Is it expensive? Compare it with a Brit bike of the period and it may seem like a very usable bargin. |

Thanks Dave P., certainly looks nice.
Is it expensive?, I'm not that in touch with the model to give an reasonable answer or even a guess, but in comparison to a British bike of that period, which, in 1971, would be a tall framed Bonneville or a Commando, different style of bikes I know but capacity wise very similar, it probably is the better buy. Although the Commando may be edging, realistically, towards the £6,-£7,000 mark, a tall framed, (oil in frame), Bonneville of that era, would probably top out at £4,500-£5,000, then there are always the ones that are priced high, but buying a more expensive bike over a less expensive one does not necessarily guarantee you a better bike, as I'm sure we all are aware, so you would need to weigh up the pros and cons of the bikes, but having had 4 Commandos already I think I could be swayed towards an Ambassador at, of course, the right price. |

I know prices can vary considerably for any given model.Commando prices vary enormously.£9,000 - £10,000 asking prices are now not uncommon.
Bonnies up to the 1970 model are very expensive.I guess it all depends on what you intend to do with them whether or not you are willing to pay the prices. My 1971 V7 special is my primary mode of transport as I don't have a car or a modern bike.In that capacity I can't imagine a more suitable "classic" for the purpose. My secondary mode of transport is now a V7 850 GT. My old Triumph 6T used to fulfill all of my requirements over a period covering 220,000 miles. It did this very well but needed more tinkering than a V7 does. I guess what I'm saying is that as a practical classic machine they don't come any more practical than the V7 range. So in my view they are good value for money compared with their contemporaries. |

I would definitely agree with that, I would say they are more practical too. For anyone thinking selling, please note; they really aren't that good and you shouldn't be asking that amount for it! Please contact Robert on......
