The arm on my gramophone is fitted with a damping mechanism. According to the instruction book (MANUALS weren't invented then), the damping fluid must be changed every 1000 plays. Can anyone recommend what oil...…………….

You'll need a silicon oil for that, says the man in my local (and very traditional) electrical appliance (espec. hifi) repair and spares shop.

And, to the topic:   Apple apparently has not yet given up on the iPod - a new iPod Touch model is expected any minute. If you don't know, these are (to all intents and purposes) an iPhone without the phone component. Significantly cheaper than an iPhone, will do all the things you asked for in your OP, and a great deal more besides (should you choose to allow it to). That's the route I went when my last 'classic iPod' bit the dust, and before I decided that carrying a phone *and* a music device *and* a compact camera (etc) was just a bit daft. Seen the prices that old iPods go for? If yours has not yet died, consider the 'trade-in' value (o;

In the 70's I had a Technics SL10 linear tracking turntable, it was both 240 and 12 volt so could be used in the house or in a caravan or boat. I tried using it in the car and it didn't jump but the music would slow down or speed up depending on left or right hand bends. How we laughed.....Big smile

That's definitely a thing! Might just be able to balance on the tank fixed with a blob or two of BluTac. Be a bit of a problem if it slipped off with me wearing headphones though.Big smile
