I took the GT out for a ride today and all was well until I got to Banbury. The traffic was very heavy and slow entering the town. I didn't "ride the clutch" I never do. Lots of slow progress in first then neutral then first. You know how it goes I got fed up and turned around and headed out of town. As soon as I reached the hill leading out to Southam the clutch started to slip as I opened the throttle. Nursing the bike home on a mostly neutral throttle it was fine, but as soon as I put any load on, the clutch slipped. This is the first time in my ownership of four big blocks that I've had a clutch problem. So, it looks as if the bike has to go on the bench. Bugger!!

My SP clutch slipped when I first had it. White spirit wash sorted it. I don't know if it was debris in the splines or oil on the plates...
Might be worth a try.
Maybe also have a look to make sure the external bits are all moving freely?

Hi Ian. I did wonder about the white spirit business.I was thinking it was for a dragging clutch but I suppose it can be used for either. I'll give it a go.

I've already checked the external bits and all seems OK.

The white spirit wash worked wonders on my 1000SP.  It’s worth a try, I reckon.

You could drop the starter off and take a look to see if things have got oily in there? I know you can look in the timing hole but I think you can see a bit more through the starter aperture. I’m assuming a loop is the same as a Tonti in this respect.

I don't know if you can see, but this was the amount of debris in my GT's clutch when I stripped it recently. I believe the last strip by previous owner was about 17000 miles ago. Wasn't slipping but horribly snatchy.

Well, did the white spirit wash.It turned out that Guzzi makes an exemplary white spirit pump. I did as recommended, bunging up the drain hole then poured in white spirit and replaced the rather old and hard inspection grommet. Started the engine and enjoyed a lower-body shower of W/S shooting out of the inspection hole which the grommet had signally failed to seal. Tried again with gaffer tape over the hole, that was a little better but not much. Anyway, the job is done and the floor is much cleaner than it was before thanks to the W/S pump.I'll test ride it tomorrow if the rain stops.

Did you drain the liquid and do it 3 or 4 times Dave? That’s what was recommended to me.
When I tried it on my loop, I found all the porosity in the flywheel housing casting - white spirit sprayed everywhere. Didn’t have that problem on Spada.
Will be interested in outcome...

No I only did it twice Ian. I was swimming in white spirit after the second time. I'll try it as it is with the view to repeating the treatment if it hasn't shown the desired results.

Must admit, when I did it, I forgot to put the bung in.... twice!  Lathe is nice and clean now.

I wish you the best on getting that clutch back in shape. Timely that I just finished a poster restoration project on a 850 Guzzi poster. My gift to you in your time of anxiety in Hi Resolution here.

Well! it works, the white spirit treatment works. I've had a ride and tested the clutch under normal riding conditions when it's fine. I've also applied more load by giving it a handful of throttle from fairly modest revs and it doesn't slip. I'm guessing that the problem was dust or debris rather than oil as there is no evidence of oil at the drain hole.
I'm not sure that I'd be happy to embark on a major tour without clocking up a good number of slip-free miles first or actually inspecting the clutch, but the way things are at present I guess I won't see the Meditteranean until next summer at the earliest.

Nice poster George thank you. But I can't get the link to work.

I'd rather like that on the shed wall.
