Hi all

Is there a world shortage of T3 condensers? everyone seems out of stock....gutsibits, . is this normal?

Is there a substitute that will be OK AND can I fit them somewhere else on the bike so I can get at them easier please, ie do they only need an earthed body and a lead to the points?

Also looking for a used Le Mans Breather box

...not asking much

condensers are .22Mf  Bosch GH 208 and possibly GD52 but check the second ref

Looking in alternative parts section a Citroen 2cv condenser works too

As long as they are earthed and the lead can reach it is good to be fair a decent long handles screwdriver will do it

Any ignition condenser will work electrically, just the physical fitting divers. Probably get one from Halfords.
So long as one side is earthed and the other is connected to the CB or coil negative it will be fine.

Evidently these are car NOS, I'd be interested what the reliablilty is, if NOS should be OK (as opposed to new ones that fail)

Mike the Guzzy Distributer is a Fiat one hence the cut out for the rotor arm in the top, the points are also car points therefore the Fiat Capacitor/Condenser does work, mind no idea if they are any more reliable I am guessing from same source to be fair only real difference is price car ones about half the price

So do condensers have a shelf life ? I've been in my shed and seem to have quite a few. New , old, some still attached to points plates. I use Piranha so obviously have a surplus . Is there a test ?
Cheers

Metal foil condensers properly made will work for decades.

There is a test, but you need an analogue resistance meter or a special capacitor tester.

From what I've read the issue seems to be insulation breakdown due to them not being able to cope with the Voltage spikes. Which is crazy because that's what they have to do. I have a theory that because they have not been required on modern vehicles for some time, nobody is testing them properly and standards have slipped.

Another ignition related ask please:

I am moving on from condensers and am assuming that to check points gap, one just rotates the central arm until the point gap is at its widest? There is no requirement for the timing marks tobe in a certain position or some other trickery?

Cheers for a great forum

Simple answer, yes.
Normally rotate the cam until the points are fully open.

easy way is get the right hand cyl to TDC it is marked as "D" the points ought to be open as they start to open, on my v1000, at 2 deg before TDC if you look into the timing 'ole you ought to see the D mark aligned with the notch, good indicator is then move back to the line before TDC then look at the distributor by eye the notch in the top, that was for the rotor arm, should be on outer edge of points and points should be just about to open, move fwds again and you can see by eye the cam and widest opening at that point move the points cam .... seems a faff but once you get your head around it quite easy. Have to say mine made way easier by having a bike lift , best with tank off as you can see right on top of the dizzy ..... Guzzis are very forgiving many yrs ago when I first got it the timing chain had not been touched there was a 10 degree lash in it, the bike still ran .... try that with any other bike lol
