I am starting a full nut and bolt restoration of a California. I have got quotes from Castle Chroming in Birmingham that add up to nearly £900 inc vat. They clearly do the proper job, copper then nickel then chrome on top.. But the price is astronomical. Although I can buy some of the parts ie the pannier rack new at half the price the chroming will be rubbish so I might consider having my old parts rechromed.

Who is using which chromers for their restorations and what sort of budgets have you had to spend.

Regards
Barry.

Is that the 900 quids worth in the photo? I was thinking of getting exactly the same bits done but thats given me second thoughts. I used S&T in Yate, Bristol about 16 years ago and the chrome they did is still perfect so I agree about about the superior quality. I'm not so much worried about asking S&T the price as telling my financial controller. She doesn't understand why things need re-chroming

Actually just a quote that could be more expensive. Doesn't include some other parts like headlight brackets.

Perhaps they quoted that price because they don't really want the job.

I just had a few T3 Cali parts chromed.  I used Classics and Chrome in Hinckley as he's decent quality, does the job in the time he says he will, and seems to be competitively priced.  Like you I took off all the crashbars and carriers and I expected it to cost a fortune so I tried to clean them up.  Actually the chrome was not too bad except for around the welds so I polished them up and treated the bad patches with rust killer.  It's not perfect, but it's not bad either.
In terms of what I did get chromed, it was limited to the headlamp brackets, Swing arm lock nuts and various brake / gearchange linkages.  Total was £90.
Whatever you've been quoted anywhere, it will probably cost double at S&T.  I'm sure they do a top job but they are way overpriced.

Punchy,
Just some other figures I paid for refinishing services....
Powdercoating of all black painted parts - and there's a lot..£220 from RPA in Bristol  He also blasted my brake discs to clean them.
Tank / sidepanels painting £300 by Dale Martin in Cheltenham.
Aquablasting of engine / fork bottoms /hub / rims £190 by Ray Dunkley (from this forum).
Rims polished, wheels built with s/s spokes and new tyres fitted £510 by CWC Coleshill.
What I can recommend is buying a zinc plating kit and replating all brackets / springs etc as you dismantle the bike.  I know zinc plating is cheap, but it's interesting to do it yourself and you don't end up with 200 bits and pieces in a box back from the plater and have to try to remember where they fit!  A kit costs less than £60.
Cheers, Derek

Thanks that helps a lot. I will be having the black metal parts painted rather than stored apart from the stand. Prices for paint will depend on the amount if preparation when The old paint has been blasted off.

Oldrat - I got the zinc plating kit here http://gaterosplating.co.uk/Zinc-Plating-kit.php
Only additional items you need are caustic soda and hydrochloric acid (brick cleaner) - both easily available.  Oh and a 12v battery or charger.

I used R&M metal finishing in Sandwich Kent, for mix of nickel and chrome . this lot of bits was £20

Not bad considering they were well rusty and fiddly, sounds like the £900 is "go away don't really want this business" quote
